The new format features the biggest hits by such well-known artists as Billy Joel, Queen, the Beatles, Tom Petty and the Electric Light Orchestra. The first song played Tuesday was “Let the Good Times Roll” by the Cars. The station wants to attract listeners age 25 to 50 who like classic rock, McKay said. How will WWNQ differ from WMFX-FM, “Fox 102,” a Columbia station already playing classic rock? WWNQ will play only the biggest hits, McKay said.
And unlike Fox 102, all the programming on WWNQ will be transmitted by satellite, and local radio personalities will not be part of the mix. The station started the classic country format four years ago. In this past summer’s Arbitron ratings, it came in 15th out of 24 local stations. The station has been in transition since Thanksgiving, when it began playing all Christmas music.
