Normal Adolescent Behavior. Inside China’s Fight Against Internet Addiction

Though the fledgling disorder has been widely identified, defining it in China has not been easy. Tao Ran, director of the Beijing treatment center and a colonel in the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), helped come up with a strict definition of Internet addiction last fall: consecutive usage of the Web for 6 hr. a day for three straight months is addiction.

The new standard, which is still pending official endorsement by the Ministry of Health, has aroused widespread skepticism in Chinese cyberspace, with many arguing that too many people could be wrongly categorized as Internet addicts under this definition. The murky guidelines have not stopped anxious parents like Wang from dragging their children to Tao’s camp, a grim, four-story building in Beijing’s major military compound. Once checked in, most patients are required to stay for three months, without access to the outside world, cell phones or, of course, computers. But unlike in other similar camps, parents of patients at the Internet Addiction Center have to stay at the camp to receive “treatment” too — because, according to Tao, Internet addiction is often a result of parenting mistakes.

The effects of a wintry blast that encased the region in ice and snow will linger for days in thousands of dark and cold homes across southern Ohio. Power lines toppled by heavy ice and downed by falling trees left about 126,000 utility customers without electricity south of Columbus last night. Snowfall totals across central Ohio since Tuesday ranged from 6 to 13 inches, with Marysville getting the most snow, said Chris Bradley, chief meteorologist at WBNS-TV (Channel 10). Statewide, at least one death and hundreds of traffic crashes were attributed to the winter storm.

Nationally, the storm has been blamed for at least 23 deaths and left more than 1 million customers without power from Texas to Maine. Bradley said that today should be clear, although more snow could move in tonight. It will be light, though: An inch or two is expected by Friday morning.

Television. FBI didn’t keep tabs on comedian Carlin’s seven words

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Talk about irony. George Carlin spent decades pushing the bounds of free speech by saying the seven words you can never say on television, but not one of them made it into an FBI file on him. Among the 12 pages in a file recently released by Carlin’s family are a couple of letters from outraged citizens who complained that the comedian had made fun of the FBI and its director, J. Edgar Hoover, during TV appearances in 1969 and 1970.

There’s also a letter from Hoover himself thanking one of Carlin’s critics for defending his honor, and an internal FBI memo that quotes the director as asking: “What do we know of Carlin?” Not much, as it turned out. The memo notes the FBI has “no data concerning Carlin” other than the two letters from his critics. “Which kind of disappoints me,” laughed Carlin’s daughter, Kelly Carlin McCall, who provided the file to The Associated Press. “It doesn’t really cover any of his more radical 1970s stuff.

Linda Evans. James L. Evans: Prayers of the inauguration

Jesus’ disciples approached him once and said, “Teach us to pray.” It was common practice in the ancient world for teachers to instruct their followers in all forms of spiritual practice. According to the New Testament, what Jesus offered in response to their request is what we now call the Lord’s Prayer. I bring this up because prayer is at the center of a controversy swirling around Tuesday’s inauguration ceremony.

President-elect Obama has invited Rick Warren, pastor of a conservative mega-church, to offer the invocation prayer on inauguration day. It’s amazing how many people are angered by this decision. Gays and lesbians who supported Obama are appalled at the selection.
