BEIJING — With its slim white body and glowing amber tip, it can easily pass as a regular cigarette. It even emits what look like curlicues of white smoke. The Ruyan V8, which produces a nicotine-infused mist absorbed directly into the lungs, is just one of a rapidly growing array of electronic cigarettes attracting attention in China, the U.S. and elsewhere — and the scrutiny of world health officials.

Marketed as a healthier alternative to smoking and a way to kick the habit, the smokeless smokes have been distributed in swag bags at the British film awards and hawked at an international trade show. Advertisement Because no burning is involved, makers say there’s no hazardous cocktail of cancer-causing chemicals and gases like those produced by a regular cigarette. There’s no secondhand smoke, so they can be used in places where cigarettes are banned. Health authorities are questioning those claims. The World Health Organization issued a statement in September warning there was no evidence to back up contentions that e-cigarettes are a safe substitute for smoking or a way to help smokers quit.

Magnum Force. It began when police waiting in specifically designated areas launched their attack as the AK-.

Four heavily armed robbers have been killed and three others, including a policeman, injured in a gunbattle after police foiled a truck hijacking and armed robbery. This took place on Tuesday after the police officers had driven about 100km to thwart the robbery on a deserted farm road west of Pretoria. The shootout occurred over a 5km stretch of road. It began when police waiting in specifically designated areas launched their attack as the AK-47-wielding gunmen opened fire on a light utility van transporting cigarettes to several shops in the Broederstroom area.

The Star has learnt that the officer shot was hiding inside the delivery van with other policemen. The policeman, who is from the Crime Intelligence Unit, was shot in a shoulder as the gunmen tried to force the van to stop. Unbeknown to the gunmen, the van they were attacking was filled with policemen.

Joe Jonas Discusses The End Of Jonas Brothers

Jonas Brothers Frontman, Joe Jonas has put a huge smile on his fans faces by assuring them that he’ll never disband the group to pursue a solo career. The 19-year-old singer admits he’s considered working on other projects between the band’s albums and touring commitments, but middle child Joe insists it would only ever be a temporary move.

He says, “People talk a lot about solo projects. It would never be a solo project, it would be a side project. We couldn’t ever break up.

Maison Petit Cubes. ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ dominates Oscars with 8 awards

, Penn’s performance proved too strong and charismatic for Oscar voters to resist. “You commie, homo-loving sons of guns,” Penn said as he accepted the Oscar. He also paid tribute to his prime competitor, saying, “Mickey Rourke rises again, and he is my brother.” Earlier in the evening, and made history in taking the awards for best supporting actor and actress.

Ledger, who was perhaps the evening’s most prohibitive favorite, won only the second acting Oscar ever given posthumously. Cruz’s win represented the first for a Spanish actress. Although a leaner Oscar telecast had been promised, chances for that looked slim from the beginning. The evening’s emotional high point came midway through with the best supporting actor win for Ledger, whose mesmerizing turn as The Joker in became an unexpected epitaph after he died at age 28 of an accidental drug overdose 13 months ago. His parents, Sally Bell and Kim Ledger, and his sister Kate Ledger accepted his Oscar.

World Friendliest Countries. globeandmail.com: Separatists win Plains of Abraham battle

from Toronto, Canada writes: Shame on Quebec sovereignists who are trying to change/hide the reality of history. It’s ridiculous antics such as this that makes me ashamed to be French Canadian. The fact of matter is that the battle took place and the British won. Sniveling and belly-aching that it ‘opens wounds, blah, blah, blah…’ well guess what? It was 250 years ago, GET OVER IT! It’s had no impact on your families for many generations. Be fortunate that you live in this country and that you have your rights, freedoms and culture.

In other countries, the victor of such a battle would have undertaken a ‘cultural/ethnic cleansing’ to deal with the matter. Trying to sweep such historical events under the rug is cowardly and serves no purpose. As the saying goes, ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ take what you can from the historical lesson and use it for your personal and cultural growth. Let us respect those who bravely fought for their beliefs, lost their lives in the act and honour their memories – regardless of which side they were on. Posted 17/02/09 at 1:09 PM EST | Ben E from Quebec, Canada writes: History’s clock sometimes runs slowly and it is too soon to re-enact the Battle of Québec.

Fifth Element. Lady Cats’ Southard reaches pair of finals

ALBUQUERQUE – There’s no way around it: The Clovis High swim team is young. A quick purview of the roster reveals that the squad has only one senior among the 20 members. The youth showed a little when the New Mexico state swimming and diving championships began on Friday – even with the swimmers who performed at or above expectations.

Clovis sophomore Jill Southard qualified for the finals in two events, a first in school history, by posting one of the top eight times in the 100-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle races in the preliminary round. The Wildcats were also hoping for either sophomore Nick de Maio or eighth-grader Lucas Brock to qualify for finals in the 200-yard boys freestyle. But Brock, with the 12th-fastest time, and de Maio (15th overall) will swim in today’s consolation finals race instead.

Spoilers. Cool K.I.T.T. in Knight Rider

It’s the super-duper cool K.I.T.T. that takes centrestage this time around. First things first – yes, the new K.I.T.T. is incredibly cool.

And it’s no longer the Knight Industries Two Thousand, by the way. It’s now the Knight Industries Three Thousand, and it’s no longer the same old classic sleek, black Pontiac Firebird Trans Am we know so well. Though one reckons if you’re going to update one of the most iconic cars in TV history, you really can’t go wrong with a Ford Mustang, cliché as that may be. Along with the vehicle upgrade, K.I.T.T. has also been fitted with all sorts of cool, state-of-the-art hardware, including a touch-screen projection screen for easy access to top secret information (whoa!), an in-built medical emergency system complete with a bio-matrix scanner to gauge your health status (wow!), missiles (woohoo!), Gatling machine guns (awesome!), and a er… fax machine (ok, so this one isn’t exactly that cool, but you get the picture).

Fuel. When Will Alex Rodriguez Strike Out For Good?

After watching thirty-five minutes of a press conference, you would expect to learn some new information about the subject it is on. Especially when that press conference is to save the integrity of one of the best baseball players of our era. After watching the Alex Rodriguez press conference today though, I came away unimpressed and even more skeptical about the All-Star slugger. The biggest confession from A-Rod was his use of “Boli,” with his cousin during the 2001-2003 seasons with the Texas Rangers, and the fact that he was also using “Ripped Fuel” during his early days with the Seattle Mariners.

Despite Rodriguez saying that he didn’t really know what he was putting into his body, I find that hard to believe. Pro athletes know what they put into their bodies at all times. There is no question that the highest-rated baseball prospect in the last 15 or so years would just leave something like this to chance.
