Ermey. Review: ‘In the Loop’

The snowball starts rolling when minor Cabinet minister Simon Foster makes a seemingly harmless remark during an interview (“War is unforeseeable”), precipitating a tornado of spin-doctoring. As the action shifts from London to Washington and ultimately to a climactic United Nations vote, operatives for and against military action engage in public relations jiu-jitsu. The lethally witty script contains sly references to current British politics and infamous foibles of the previous American administration, such as assigning important responsibilities to the young and inexperienced: “It’s like ‘Bugsy Malone,’ but with real guns.” Peter Capaldi’s hilariously volcanic Tucker owes less to Derek Jacobi’s master politician in “I, Claudius” than to R. Lee Ermey’s drill sergeant in “Full Metal Jacket.

” Tom Hollander’s Foster is an innocuous bumbler who realizes too late his role in this puppet theater. For the Yanks, James Gandolfini is a welcome presence as a bull-like general with strong convictions. David Rasche exudes slimy sub-rosa confidence as the Dick Cheney/Donald Rumsfeld stand-in. The film can feel like a series of dressings down, and the romantic subplots are superfluous, but “In the Loop” is a very effective, verbally blood-stained portrait of how a little brazen scheming on one side, coupled with selfishness and failure of nerve on the other, can actually change the world.

Earthquake Angeles. California ‘due for big earthquake’ after tremors near San Adreas fault signal increased stress

The increase in tremors could mean that stress is accumulating faster than in the past along that segment of the fault, which ruptured in the magnitude 7.8 Fort Tejon earthquake of 1857, Robert Nadeau, a seismologist at the University of California at Berkeley, and his colleagues wrote in their report, published in the journal Science. The region of southern California experiences a quake every 85 to 142 years, they said – making a quake theoretically 10 years overdue. There have been some quakes nearby in the meantime, but the tremors keep occurring, Mr Nadeau said.

“What’s surprising is that the activity has not gone down to its old level,” Mr Nadeau said in a statement. A series of small tremors was seen a few days before the Parkfield quake, so Nadeau hopes there may be a way to interpret them to get some kind of warning of future quakes. The San Andreas fault runs through much of California, the most populous state in the United States.

Iran Neda. Shot woman, Neda, becomes global symbol of Iranian protests

New York, June 22 : The death of Neda, which means ‘voice’ in Farsi, has become the central rallying cry of the Iranian protests that followed the disputed presidential election. Iranian state media has confirmed 17 deaths as a result of the protests. But one death, a woman by the name of Neda, has stood out to protesters and to the world. Neda was shot at a protest in Tehran, and her shocking and quick death in the arms of her howling father was captured on close up video, now widely circulated on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and other sites. The fresh-faced teenage girl killed by what appears to be a single sniper shot on the streets of Tehran Saturday is now a potent symbol for Iran’s pro-democracy protesters.

“RIP Neda, the world cries seeing your last breath,” was one of a flood of messages on Twitter. “They killed Neda, but not her voice,” read another. “Neda is everyone’s sister, everyone’s daughter, everyone’s voice for freedom,” said a third. Within hours of her death, posters of the girl’s face, open-eyed and bloody, were being brandished by demonstrators in Los Angeles and New York City, the Daily News reported.

Micah Pate. Bartlett Woman Missing After Evening Jog

Bartlett, Tenn. – The Bartlett Police Department is looking for Micah Denise Pate, last seen leaving for an evening jog Thursday night. Her husband contacted police around 10:30pm after his wife had been gone for over two hours. Mr. Pate advised officers that she was usually at home and asleep by 10:00pm and that this was very uncharacteristic of her.

All of Micah’s personal items were left at the house when she left. Micah Pate is described as a white female, 5′ 5″, 115 pounds with blond short hair and blue eyes. Mrs. Pate was last known to be wearing a long sleeve blue shirt and brown pants. Bartlett Police Investigators have been talking with friends and family members in attempting to locate Mrs. Pate, and investigators do not suspect foul play at this time.

Couple, their 3 kids found dead in Maryland home : 24 Hour Breaking News : The Buffalo News

A Maryland man who killed his wife and three children before fatally shooting himself left behind five notes, including an apology to family members and hints that he suffered from psychiatric problems, authorities said. The local sheriff said there were also signs that the family had financial problems. For residents of the small town of Middletown and members of Holy Family Catholic Community Church, where the slain mother taught catechism, reports of the brutal killings were upsetting and baffling. “We’re all in shock and trying to come to terms,” said Kevin Farmer, the pastor of Holy Family.

Christopher Alan Wood killed his wife and children, then himself, in their northwest Maryland home, leaving a gruesome scene that authorities said was found Saturday by the children’s’ grandfather. The 33-year-old mother and three children suffered “traumatic cuts” and each also had at least one gunshot wound from a.25-caliber handgun, Frederick County Sheriff Charles Jenkins said. Their precise cause of death wasn’t immediately known, and Jenkins declined to say what was used to slash them. Jenkins said Wood, an accountant at railroad operator CSX Corp., apologized to family members in one of the notes he left at the scene.
